Wikipedia, July 8, 2014 (Dom Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira, born sometime in the 1460s in Sines; died 23 December 1524 in Cochin, India; a Portuguese explorer. He is one of the most famous and celebrated explorers from the Age of Discovery, being the first European to reach India by sea. This discovery was significant and paved the way for the Portuguese to establish a long-lasting colonial empire in Asia. In 1880, the remains of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões (who celebrated Gama's first voyage in his 1572 epic poem, The Lusiad), were translated to new carved tombs in the nave of the Monastery of the Hieronymites, in Belém)
